Sailing Movement Points (MPs)

Sailing MPs available this watch are determined from the Movement Point Table.  Cross-index SQs deployed with the wind force.  Hence, a vessel with four SQs deployed at wind force 5-6, has 6 MPs available this watch.

Divide the Movement Points by the Sailing Grade in the Sailing & Oar MP Table.  If the movement points exceed 10 when divided by the figures in the Sailing & Oar MP Table use the Special Effects column on the Wind force table to determine the hazard rating if the pilot does not decrease SQ.

A ship is beating when she is trying to sail into the wind.  A ship is beating when her bow is within two points of the wind.  Hauling is any time the wind is two points forward of the beam to one point aft of the beam using the mariner’s sixteen point compass rose as shown in the table.

As an example: if the wind is from the north a ship is beating when heading north.  She is actually turning from NW to NE on a frequent basis.  She is hauling when she is heading any where between NW and WSW or NE to ESE and this is her base course.[3]  She is running on any course between ESE through south to WSW.
