Azeryan Money

By James S. Watson

The following system of money is based on that developed by the author for his Azeryan campaign.  The author has assumed that the system originated in Azeryan Empire and spread to the rest of the civilized areas of Western Lythia from there.  This system is based on the Troy system of weights:

Troy Weights:

                        Grain                                                                           (0.0648 grams)

                        Carat                           3.086 grains                            (0.2000 grams)

                        Pennyweight               24 grains                                 (1.5552 grams)

                        Ounce                          20 pennyweights                     (31.1035 grams)

                        Pound                          12 Ounces                               373.24 grams)

Coinage is made up of three metals: Gold, Silver, and Copper in order of decreasing rarity.  The following table shows the coins of this system listed by size and value with the equivalent sized coins of the current U. S. coinage system.

Notes:

20 shillings equals a pound but there is no coin of this value.  It is bookkeeping term.  Although the silver penny exists in theory the smallest silver coin in use is the six pence coin.  This is the most valuable coin most villains and poor simple folk will ever see.  Most business by these folk in conducted with copper coins.  Middle class simple folk will be familiar with the Shilling and Silver Eagle and may see a Quarter or Half Eagle from time to time.  Only the wealthy will ever see the larger gold coins.
